2 Trends Thought Leaders Must Pay Attention To

When legendary folks release their findings, I perk up and listen. Epic venture capitalist Mary Meeker points out tech trends that will change our game moving forward.

A lot of these findings support what we already know, so let’s move past that. Two trends that thought leaders need to pay attention to:

• Subscription services are now the norm: Yes, these business models have been around for ages in self-help segments. What’s different now: market acceptance, thanks to Netflix and The New York Times. The key: a robust free tier. That means we are expected to give away more than ever before. Deciding what to give away is easier said than implemented, though.

• Education is self-directed: Folks who want to stay ahead of the curve at work go to YouTube and online courses. Combine that with the explosion of platforms we can put our curriculum on, and I see some low-hanging fruit. The caveat: You still have to stand out, as students see many options on these platforms.

Yes, these trends have been around for a while – the big difference is critical mass. There is a window of opportunity here before these tactics get oversaturated and harder to monetize. It’s time to act, or stay out.
