2 Unwritten Rules for Networking at High-End Events
Many of us are out and about again, attending conferences, doing keynote addresses, and attending high-end events. Networking has become a priority.
Beware, though, of a huge mistake I see people making at high-end events. They use the same pitch when talking with people at those events as they do when they are among peers and influencers.
People at high-end events are inundated with offers. So, if you find yourself networking at a one, you must change your approach. Here are two unwritten rules to remember as you network with folks:
• Be intriguing first: Now is not the time to walk in with solutions and ideas. Instead, have a conversation. Talk shop. Show your insider status on their world. They need to see you as someone who can hold their own and have an interesting take on what’s going on.
• Be casual: People at these events can smell desperation at 50 paces. If they express interest, talk about challenges, outcomes, and overall approach. Don’t try to close too soon. This adage still holds true: The higher up the org chart, the more casual the close.
Given the access to often invisible players, these events can feel like high-stakes endeavors. But when you understand the unwritten rules, you come into the arena calm and confident.
