Freedom for Everyone
It’s July 4, the day when we in the United States celebrate that our country was built on liberty.
During these interesting times, I find myself asking this question: What are we willing to do to ensure our freedoms are available to everyone?
Right now, there seems to be a lot of fighting over “freedom,” particularly ours. But do we extend the same availability to those we disagree with? To those who want to live differently than us? To those who worship differently than us?
The answers show up in decisions we make that impact other people. In this era of distrusting our institutions, banning books, etc., we need to ask ourselves if freedom applies only to certain people. People who look, act, and worship like us. We must also ask if the founding fathers really wanted their sacrifice to come to this.
As for me, freedom isn’t limited to certain groups. Our country stands on the idea that everyone has rights. Let’s remember this as we advocate for ours.
