Breaking Up with a Subcontractor: When and How
Talk to any successful business owner, and they will tell you that it takes a team. The same is true for smaller shops. The difference being we hire subcontractors instead of full-time employees. However, like with employees, there may come a time when we need to end the relationship with a subcontractor.
Ending the relationship with a subcontractor and finding a new resource is easier said than done. Here’s why:
• We get attached to the person. Working with someone in the trenches is an intimate experience. These relationships can quickly change from client/vendor to colleague. So, when circumstances change, we accommodate because we are loyal. Do that enough times, and working with them becomes a struggle that we tolerate. The old saying about frogs in boiling water comes into play here.
• Replacing someone feels too big. When we realize it’s time for a change, finding someone we trust feels daunting. Procrastination sets in and stretches the timeline. Instead of putting this off, take baby steps. Ask around for recommendations. Sometimes, the right person is hiding in plain sight.
Most business relationships don’t end with a big mistake or a disagreement. When we make too many accommodations, the equation changes from a good fit to a struggle. It’s up to us to know our limits and recognize when it’s time to make a change.
