How to Expand What You Are Famous For
I had a great conversation the other day with a business owner who’s famous for their widgets and wants to expand into another area. The problem: the new advisory division is floundering because it’s not compelling like the widget. The premise behind the advice is everywhere; the uniqueness is lost.
This happens to all of us who get successful at something. We forget what was compelling and don’t apply it to the new endeavor. The buyers’ perspective: This is confusing and besides, I can get the same thing everywhere.
How to avoid this struggle: Tell a story about the connection between what you are famous for and your next big adventure. Why are you expanding now? What does this have to do with your widgets? Why would we buy both? You need a bridge between the compelling part of your current efforts and your new expansion.

At some point, what made you unique in the beginning now feels like a very small box. But you don’t have to stay all cramped up. Show the compelling connection and you can get outta there.
