Use Color Commentary to Stand Out
Last month we explored how to use current events to showcase your thinking. Let’s continue with another idea: using what I call “color commentary” regarding current events. This recent article from USA today is a great example of color commentary in action. Here are two things you can copy from it:
• Linking disparate things, such as the college admissions scandal and Michael Jackson, creates intrigue. So, when positioning your thinking, broaden your scope to include more than one event.
• Underlying theme. My favorite thing about this article is the insight about denial. Not only does the author link the events with a common emotion, but she also asks provocative questions about timing: open secret vs. now we’re talking about it.
