How to Revive an Oft-used Marketing Tactic

Heads-up: handy tool ahead! Social Media Today recently published an infographic about the pros and cons of webinars and podcasts. It’s a nice reminder for folks who do both.

But let’s move past the content and focus on how Social Media Today effectively used comparisons. This marketing tactic is everywhere. What is it about comparing things that gets people to take notice? Two things:

• The popularity: Webinars and podcasts are popular content marketing platforms. This creates an interesting one-two punch. First, their popularity hooks the reader in. Second, the comparison helps the reader decide which tactic works best. Anything that helps readers make a choice will get attention and will be shared.

• The similarities: Podcasts and webinar formats are different enough to be evaluated and similar enough in outcome (getting the word out), which makes the comparison intriguing. So, if you use this marketing tactic, make sure the things you compare go beyond commonplace. The mash-ups matter.

Yes, I’ve frequently said to move on when a tactic becomes overused. However, this infographic shows how a common tactic can still work if you change how you use it.
