Are AI-Generated Images the Future of Small Business Design?
After getting caught up in the dark side of copyright law, AI-generated images seem like a great alternative. An infographic from OneDeck has opened my eyes. In it, the company outlines five ways small businesses can use AI image generators:
• Create graphics for websites, blogs, and social media channels
• Quickly edit and enhance existing images
• Create vector illustrations
• Create logos, icons, and branding materials
• Design online ads
Many of us use images in content marketing to reinforce our ideas. So, before you start using AI-generated images, it’s important to think about how those images might affect your brand. Here are a couple of things to consider:
• Brand alignment. Do “fake” images make you seem inauthentic by association? Only if they don’t support your brand. For example, if you’re known for bespoke services, then using a ubiquitous image would contradict that perception. (Users I’ve spoken to report that AI images are nondescript.) Ask yourself: Do these images conflict with what folks believe about me?
• Intent. If you use AI-generated images to illustrate your perspective, does it matter how the image was created? Do your potential clients care? I could understand if we claimed these images were real or originated from you. However, depending on the purpose of the image, AI-sourced illustrations might not face much resistance.
My hot take: AI-generated images are like any other tool. They must align with our market strategy. If buyers don’t care (and research so far shows that they don’t), then perhaps it’s time to consider an alternative to the riskier photo-sharing sites.
