Are You Spoof-Proof?
Laughed out loud when I clicked on this Fast Company article that spoofs the worst in the advertising industry. Then I realized how many thought leaders commit the same crime and it wasn’t so funny anymore.
Think about this: if someone spoofed thought leader marketing, would you be included? Be brutal here. Here’s my calling-the-game list of cringe-worthy strategies some of us do every day:
- Selling the dream but offering very few solutions
- Using new metaphors for already-out-there ideas (aka old wine in a new bottle)
- Tell your story and “inspire” everyone with no real take-aways
- “Adapt” your perspective in places where it clearly does not belong (aka basket weaving for Fortune 500 executives)
We’ve seen others do the above time and again. It’s much harder to see it in ourselves. Better to fix our market strategy now than have someone else point out our blemishes.
