Big Changes Ahead for Speaker Sponsors

Nothing says the holidays like crystal ball gazing. And since events and speaking are high priorities, let’s check out these predictions from meeting industry insiders.

Move past the logistics and hotel stuff; the findings about trade shows and sponsorship uncover an interesting opportunity. It looks like fluid relationships with sponsors (third-party folks who fund stuff like speakers) could impact “content consumption.” (That’s us.) The ways attendees consume educational materials is changing – whether it be “bite-sized labs or fully digital experiences,” says Carrie Abernathy, co-founder of the Association for Women in Events.

This is good news, given that conventional wisdom predicts smaller budgets. What it will require, though, is a different relationship between thought leaders who speak and how sponsors use education as a marketing tool in events.

An easy next step: Look at how you package your content. Are your formats compatible to these trends? If not, it should be pretty easy to convert. Or better yet, how can you create a “laboratory” based on your platform?

As you plan speaking goals for 2019, be sure to include strategies that make you attractive to these third parties. Anything that increases ROI here will put you on the fast track.

Hey Jim -- Thanks for the kind words about the card. Love sending those out... Just emailed you about your speaking. Let me know if I can help.

I love getting your card every year. I want to get back into speaking. The only speaking I do is on cruise ships ( last time was 3/18). I think you have a typo above. Shouldn't it be Value not Vale? Can we set up a time to talk to see what I have to do and how you can help and what your fees are these days? I was in the healthcare industry but don't want to go back into it
