I love a good comeback story. And this in-depth Bleacher Report article about MLB player Justin Verlander and his wife Kate Upton has a couple of great lessons for us thought leaders who get sidelined – and how to get back in the game. What I learned:

• Stop your stories. You need to let go of what worked before. Let’s take that idea deeper: Let go of your assumptions about what went wrong. When you misdiagnose the cause, you lose the best path forward.

• Get a 360-degree view of what’s goin’ on. This is related to above. I love the story about the physical therapist who found the real cause of Verlander’s injuries. Why didn’t the other folks discover that? Because their perspective was too narrow. (That is why I tell folks that using tacticians for strategy is a recipe for disaster.) A holistic view can uncover hidden causes.

As the Bleacher Report article shows, even the best can get sidelined. But it’s not necessarily the end. Our solutions are usually hidden in places we haven’t look before.
