Honor the Ultimate Sacrifice
The unofficial start of summer has arrived in the United States, with Memorial Day yesterday kicking off a season of lazy days and outdoor adventures. As I send a silent thank you to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, I ponder how we use this gift. It doesn’t look good.
Yes, these brave soldiers gave their lives for a bigger ideal so that we, the people, can govern ourselves much better than a king or dictator. But how we practice that patriotic idea of freedom has taken a dark turn.
Freedom of speech doesn’t mean we can yell fire in a theatre. Freedom of religion isn’t permission to force others to practice our faith. Freedom of the press isn’t a license to deliberately lie to boost ratings. Freedom depends on our personal integrity.
The biggest enemy of freedom isn’t a dictator; it’s continuous abuse.
Yesterday, we acknowledged a debt that cannot be repaid. The least we can do to honor their sacrifice is to stop using the ideals they died for as weapons to hurt one another.
