A colleague was so excited about a great opportunity that landed at her feet. We did our happy dance, and she promised to keep me posted. Three months later, the horror stories came in. What looked like a great way to grow turned into a slow-moving train wreck. Bummer.

What happened: This was the right opportunity at the wrong time. She didn’t have the tools to take full advantage of it, so she created what she could on the fly. And that effort wasn’t enough to make it work. Result: Not only were there lackluster sales, but she also earned a “not ready for prime time” reputation with a group of high-end buyers. It will take a while to fix this.

There is no cosmic law out there that says we get only one lucky break. In fact, we often get more than one opportunity to the big leagues. Given that, it’s OK to turn down what looks like your big chance—because there’s another one coming at just the right time.
