How Cool Opportunities Are Born

Last month, I used Sylvia Acevedo as an example of how we can use our past to springboard into a new future. Let’s revisit Sylvia’s story to explore how to get those high-end invitations. How did she get that White House Commission post? That opportunity seemed to pop up out of nowhere. It didn’t.

Here’s what happened: Sylvia applied her “rocket science” skills to a larger goal — scaling education. Her initial work went well enough in Austin to get her noticed for a bigger project in Los Angeles. That project started out at 20,000 people attending an event; then the event grew to 50,000. When 250,000 books found homes with kids who didn’t have any, she got the attention from DC.

This is how cool opportunities are born. You start small and strategic. You don’t have to know what’s coming next. Just have faith that success gets noticed; more chances to be successful follow. I call this the power of the parlay.

Opportunities pop up when: 1) our platform is tied to a mission bigger than ourselves; and, 2) everyone is clear about what we do. Access to high-end opportunities is one of the biggest “deliverables” to a strategic approach to branding.

So the pivot point is not what we bring to the table. It’s what we do with our talents that paves the way to opportunities that skyrocket our profile.
