How to Be a Hit: 2 Strategies to Grow Your Audience
Wanna be a smash hit? Look at what the new political podcast, Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar, is doing. The show isn’t just for politicos, though. It has pointers for thought leaders, too, as a recent Fast company article points out.
Let’s move past the attraction of the odd couple here. In a sea of established political podcasts, these upstarts went from 40,000 subscribers to 285,000 in just 48 hours. How did they do it? In part, by using these two strategies:
• Change the target. They tapped into a broader issue and redirected the attention there. Key quote: “We want to make people hate each other less and hate the ruling class more.” They redefined populism, taking ownership away from both parties. Both sides now have something to agree with. Ask yourself: What issue can I redefine that takes ownership away and gives it to me?

• Locate where unlikely bedfellows can meet. These two hosts brilliantly unite a fractured audience. Example from the article: They called out the Biden administration’s response to IRS leaks to find the source, rather than addressing the economic imbalance exposed by it. This perspective is exactly where progressive and conservative interests meet, and the hosts use it to cut through the culture wars and reach a wide audience of unlikely bedfellows. These types of issues reside in our markets, too, ready for us to take advantage.
This is what happens when market strategy hits a home run. When our approach finds a rare place of agreement, the market responds fast.
