How To Be A Supercompetitor
Yes, the market is hyper competitive. Buyers have more options than budgets. But how we become more competitive is changing according to this Fall strategy+business article.
The upshot: by focusing on what they do exceptionally well, these organizations reshape their entire industries. While the focus is on larger organizations, these ideas translate well into thought leadership. Key takeways for us:
- It’s not enough to know what you are good at. The key is knowing the value you create. What specific outcomes do you create consistently? What’s the value of those outcomes? What’s the relevance? My analysis shows that the difference between a sought-after leader and a thought leader and the ignored is that the latter overstates their impact.
- Examples such as Amazon and Apple show the power of multiplying your gifts. Whatever you’re good at must cross boundaries. Either have multiple applications in one industry or the same applications spread among several industries. We can’t be one thing to one person anymore.
- These organizations grow by mergers and acquisitions. But only with those partners who complement the focus. The best thought leaders grow by strategic alliances. They will let go of what they’ve outgrown.
A noisy market has made strategy even more critical. Super competitors are more focused. They have a defined territory, and they dominate that space. Now is the time to take a hard look at your focus for 2015. The strategic — not those with the most Facebook posts — are gonna grow.
