In my previous blog post, 3 Trends Impacting Keynote Speaker Selection, I pointed out trends that will change how professional speakers market keynote speaking. Now I want to drill down on the trend I explored in the podcast: audience engagement. (You can listen to the podcast on the blog post page.)

As the 2022 Speaking Industry Benchmark Report pointed out about buyer expectations, engagement tops education. In the age of social media, grabbing attention has gone beyond the audience. Buyers now want to use speakers’ presentations to captivate their community. They want buzz that will promote attendance in an environment where many events go after the same participants.

The big question now: How can you create experiences that transfer to an audience who didn’t hear your speech? Your stories won’t be told in full here. The experiences you create will be hard to describe to the outsider.

The antidote: Identify a phrase that people repeat and refer to. This phrase should be direct, to the point, and easy to understand without having to hear the story. It’s the quotable comment that everyone tweets about. I call it the “money line.”

The money line is short, aspirational, and penetrates to the heart of the matter. It’s a great way to generate buzz past the event and into social media. When polishing your next presentation, ask yourself: What can I say that will easily transfer to other platforms? Have these bon mots ready.
