How to Get Media Attention in the Age of Social Media
Before the age of social media, you had to use third parties to bump up your publicity profile. Now, though, you can easily find reporters yourself. If you look in the right places and on the right social platforms, that is.
According a recent study by Pew Research, 78% of reporters say social media is a good place to find sources. The catch: The platforms reporters use to find experts to interview are different than the places where the public consumes news. In general, Twitter and Facebook are the two top places to find reporters, according to the survey.
But reporters’ go-to platforms will change depending on what they write about: local and state news vs. national and international news. Even the writer’s age contributes to their social media usage. That means where you look for reporters matters.

This is a bigger example of how social platforms have leveled the playing field of access. That availability, though, has a bigger ripple effect. Not only do you have to know where to look, but you also have to substantially change how you approach reporters. So, look at this study with a wide-angle lens and ask yourself: “What changes do I need to make in my media relations effort?”
