How to Get Your Stories In Front of Bigger Audiences

Heads up: I’m about to use a controversial example to make a broader point. If you can’t move past the example, it’s OK to stop reading. Any disparaging comments will be respectfully deleted and ignored.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s drill down on stories. Sharing experiences is still white-hot right now, and portals are springing up to collect them. This Fast Company article about a non-profit portal for coming-out stories shares some interesting insights about a bigger challenge we all face: expanding visibility and readership of the stories we promote. Two tactics we thought leaders can copy:

• Partnerships. This portal has opened up to other organizations such as the New York Commission on Human Rights. Not only will their employees show up there, but the commission will also promote the portal on their social media efforts. How you can apply this: Think about how can you expand your reach through partnerships. Where can you invite more stories?

• New places. It would be very comfortable to promote the portal to the like-minded. Instead these folks are going to rural areas, where many gays feel misunderstood. How we can apply this: Identify where the resistance is. Look for places where another perspective is more popular and where you can put your stories to amplify your best message. In competitive markets, solidifying your base won’t grow your influence.

The novelty of stories has worn off. Everyone tells them. For your stories to stand out you, you must focus on who tells them and where they are told. Expand the spotlight.
