How to Leverage Cool Opportunities
Confession: I’m a sucker for killer come-back stories. So, of course, Shangela, superstar from RuPaul’s Drag Race, gets my “by any means necessary” award for being unstoppable and brilliantly leveraging opportunities. (And why you don’t mess with Texas.)
Fast Company’s recent article about Shangela reveals her mindset and explains her backstory. She used her appearances on Drag Race to get bigger acting roles and some substantive brand deals. Two ideas thought leaders can copy from her ability to leverage opportunities:
• Promote before the opportunity. Shangela used the TV show as a door-opener and booked dates before airtime. Book authors, take note. Your next best step: Put on a wide-angle lens and ask yourself: Who would be impressed by my appearance? Then use that as your door-openers. Buyers like to get in on the ground floor, so use the “head up” routine as an introduction.
Listen: How to Leverage Your Spotlight Moment
• Pivot the pitch. Shangela couldn’t reveal what happened on the TV show. (And she didn’t want to.) So instead she answered the question with a better question: What do you think? She leveraged her confidence and used people’s imagination to her advantage. Brilliant countermove.
A lot of us have had great opportunities come our way. And sadly, the days are gone when those are enough to launch new growth. I’ve seen too many opportunities not create more prospects after the spotlight fades. The key is to be strategic and systematic about leveraging those golden moments.
