How to Leverage Your Popularity

Yay!! My favorite authors have done it again. Yep, Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne have hit it out of the park again with Blue Ocean Shift: Beyond Competing, a follow-up to their book Blue Ocean Strategy. Here’s a cool interview with them that will show you why their new book will be a blockbuster.

Like most popular authors, these two had an interesting dilemma. If they went too far away from the Blue Ocean platform, the book would look like an orphan. The risk of recreating the wheel is high. If they stayed too close to the previous book, they look like a one-hit wonder. A fabulous dance on the head of a strategic pin.

We don’t have to write a bestseller in order to use their strategy, though. Key takeaways:

• They took the idea to the ground. This book is still about finding “blue oceans.” Only this time it’s about competition; it’s about people and teams. The second book looks like an extension of the previous work without repeating itself.

Listen: How to stay relevant once you’re popular

• They created credible alternative to a popular option. Everyone loves disruptions as long as they are the change-maker. These authors created a viable alternative: creating new markets. Again, it’s an extension without repeating.

Even bestselling authors have to work to stay relevant. This is a great example of how to leverage the popularity of your work without coming of like a one-hit wonder.
