Sometimes voicing the negative aspects of something is a good thing. Consider a recent Fast Company article about the downside of being a digital nomad. The author positions the negative aspects of a very popular notion in two effective ways:

• As an insider. The author used her on-the-ground experience to convey a practical perspective. By recounting her personal experience, she positions her points as “lessons learned,” which is a less judgmental posture. You can apply this strategy by using your experience in similar situations.

• As a heads-up. The author also positioned specific situations as a heads-up to show that working in those cool beach towns isn’t as glamourous as it sounds. By acknowledging the fun parts towards the end of the article, the reader doesn’t feel wrong or blamed by their assumptions. Again, the author provides simply more food for thought.
