How We Get Sucked Into Stupid Situations

Have you ever woken up and realized, “What a minute! I’m in the middle of a stupid situation. How did I get here?”

No, it isn’t because you are a failure. Train wrecks are a perfect storm of passion, impatience, and opportunity. When you want something so bad and someone dangles that very thing in front of you, it’s hard to not jump over the cliff.

Let’s drill down on the two stories we tell ourselves that make us vulnerable to “ideas” that look good on paper but are destined to fail.

• “All of this can be yours if only…”— This happens when you are excited but also nervous because everything seems new and “next level.” You got seduced. This happens a lot when the road ahead looks murky and you don’t know how to proceed.

• “But you can have it all right now … and this may not be here forever.”— This story is a one-two punch. First, you got impatient. Then you got scared the opportunity would go away. This happens a lot when you have a good relationship with the person who piqued your interest.

Keep in mind that no one is a villain or a victim here. Bad situations can happen to the best of us. But when you recognize the stories we tell ourselves before taking action, you can dodge a lot of bullets.
