As the marketplace demands that we be “relevant,” this decision has become more strategic than many of us realize. The key is to pick a topic that appeals to your audience but also reveals something they haven’t thought about before. That’s easier said than done with all the noise out there.

Yes, social media is a great place to start. Twitter has advanced search applications that will show what your prospects (and competitors) are talking about. Keep in mind, though, that everyone else has that information, too.
Your best next step: Don’t just chime in—that’s what everyone else does. Instead, step back and figure out what’s not being said, and go there. Your insights from that perspective will position you not only as a deep thinker, but also as an insider who knows the secrets.
