Lessons from Outside the Spotlight
A heads-up from the personal department: One of my favorite people (and mother in-law extraordinaire) has made her transition. At 93 years old, Betty lived well. Her transition was peaceful and surrounded by love.
I learn a lot from people who are quietly outside the spotlight. Two lessons that we can all use:
1. You can be strong without being loud. In my earlier days, I would confuse the two. Watching Betty make her wishes clear without pulling the “I’m the queen” card gave me a few new tools to influence. Result: My initial reactions are now more nuanced.
Listen: 2 mellow reactions that get results
2. Walking away and quitting are very different. I used to be proud of my “never quit” attitude. And yes, I’m still persistent. Watching Betty accept reality and let go taught me that banging my head against the wall just so I can say “I don’t quit” is just silly. It’s OK to be done.
Betty will be missed. But her legacy (and her big heart) lives on.
