One Thing to Ask Yourself When You Are Struggling
Over the summer, my husband and I did our third annual cross-country road trip. It was epic—and also good to be home.
We toured four national parks on our way to New England. Hiking Bryce Canyon for the first time taught me a good lesson that applies to being an entrepreneur, as well.
What happened: We were returning back up the canyon after a 90-minute trek below. I was huffing and puffing, stopping often to rest. The sun felt like it was burning through my skin. And my inner attitude was just as harsh: “I can’t believe I am this outta shape. What the heck was wrong with me? Etc.” Think Judge Judy on a bender.
Hubby must’ve read my mind when he reminded me: “You know, we’re above 9,000 feet.” What?!? The light bulb went off. My rookie mistakes became clear: I underestimated the environment. And worse, I judged my performance based on that faulty assumption. Bummer.
Listen: Do this before starting anything new
If being an entrepreneur is about trying different things, how do we assess (OK, judge) our performance on the first try? Not like I did, that’s for sure.
Moral of the story: The next time you struggle, don’t judge yourself or the viability of your gifts. Instead, look around and ask: “What is going on around me that’s different?” Figure that out, and you’ll adjust both your performance and attitude much faster.
