Put Your Platform In the Spotlight

Earlier this month, we talked about making your brilliance useful in real life. Another way to put your platform into action: Create a passion project. One of my favorite examples comes from my friend from Harvard, Lili Gil Valletta.

Lili’s marketing agency stands out by advocating a cause: the power of the Latino market. By itself, the cause is quite relevant. Instead of talking about it, though, she founded Dreamers Ventures to address the gaps in funding and mentoring. Then she partnered with Project American Dreams at HSN, and her advocacy took center stage.

Two ways to take a page from Lili’s playbook:

1. Lili partnered with folks who have a big audience. Sure, Lili could’ve launched this herself. But instead, she leveraged HSN’s reach. When we are willing to share the spotlight, bigger things can happen. Ask yourself: Who can take this project to the next level? Then figure out what you can bring to the table.

2. Lili implemented her platform. It’s one thing to talk about Latinos as an economic powerhouse. It’s another to showcase that power. Project American Dreams demonstrated Lili’s underlying theme. She’s showed instead of told. This effort turned statistics into an experience. Ask yourself: How can I show instead of tell?

Why this worked: Lili made sure all the stakeholders got what they wanted. And when everyone wins, momentum appears effortless.

This is the difference between having a perspective and launching a movement. The former can get lost in the shuffle. The latter shines in the spotlight.
