Small Business Website Trends
Just as my website is finally fixed and working great, I run across this article on outdated web features. Great timing. Not.
While I may not be ready to give up my bells and whistles, this perspective deserves an open mind. The benchmark here: user experience and impact. The biggest surprise was how many popular techniques impact navigation. (And that some don’t even work on Apple.) My question: shouldn’t our website designers tell us this stuff first?
Before we fall in love with our website gadgets, let’s stop and think about what the user wants. It’s easy to get so focused on getting our message “out there” that we can lose sight of how that information is perceived by new visitors. There are practical reasons why that flash intro and photo carousel is annoying.
We’re all guilty of some of these mistakes (OK, so stock photos are not my friends). Moving forward, my first focus is on the users. Then I will create clean pages that are easy to navigate.
