The Art of Caring: How to Support Laid-off Clients and Open Future Doors
When companies tighten their budgets, they often lay off employees. And your clients—your champions at their firms—could be among those affected. When they go, your projects come to a stop.
That doesn’t mean your relationship with the person has to end, however. Acts of generosity during that fragile time can cement your relationship and open the door for more opportunities down the road.
The first thing you want to do is provide a double dose of empathy. Think about how to offer those clients moral support. It doesn’t have to be services that you usually charge for. For example, you could send them a gift basket filled with meaningful items and call it a “survival kit” for their next adventure. Let your clients know you care about them as people.
When those clients are ready to join the job hunt, think about how you can help them. Many of us have books, online courses, membership subscriptions, and more resources that cost very little to share. They will remember how you helped them get back out there.
