The Demographic Trend You Care About

Whether you work in the corporate or mass market, you will work with the Millennial generation. This handy report about this generation has great insights. My favorite findings:
- The impact of Hispanic culture on this generation. Yes, they are the most diverse. A majority of Hispanic Millennials were also born here; almost 25% of this generation is Hispanic. And the influence of food, music, etc., will spill over to the non-Hispanics. Bottom line: expanding here (i.e., Cinco de Mayo celebrations!) will appeal to everyone.
- They are more career driven than many of us think, with over half (53%) wanting to get to the “very top” of their career. The entrepreneurial spirit is also alive and well, with around half wanting to start their own business one day.
- Pay attention to their definition of “normal.” What we older generations see as new and exciting is less impressive. Example: Constant internet access is “normal.” It’s a need, not a want.
Our best step to adapt? Adjust our thinking in two areas: (1) want vs. need; and, (2) normal vs. “new.” If we can grasp those differences, most of these changes will make sense.
