The Future of Fame
For a peek into the future of thought leadership, let’s check into what the next generation (or two) is up to. To help us out, Fast Company goes to VidCom, the huge conference for video bloggers everywhere. Think: Justin Beiber fans take over YouTube.
Best quote was from co-founder Hank Green: “…I don’t know what I’m doing…I don’t think any of us know what we’re doing. There is a wave…and it’s individual people making individual decisions about how they’re going to spend their individual time. And we’re riding it. And that’s impressive. But it is not as impressive as understanding the wave.”
Folks, we need to take this seriously. Entertainment execs, talent agencies, tech start-ups attend this event looking for talent. (Popular panel session: Working with the next generation of talent.) YouTube is getting involved by making “stars” out of some of these youngsters. Yes, I’m scared too.
My predictions:
- Thought leaders of the future will be discovered based on their “voice” more than their content. And speaking of voice…obnoxious is out, personable yet bold is in.
- Prominence will be redefined by the number of followers you have instead of your media mentions. Sponsors will respond accordingly.
