The Key to Making a Change: Trust the Process
I’m not an athlete. I don’t even watch a lot of sports. What I love about professional sports, though, are athletes’ stories about the journey. How do top athletes keep going? How do they stay on top? According to this spring article from NBC Sports, it’s not a linear adventure.
The reader’s digest version of the article: Major League Baseball player Hunter Pence decided to revamp his batting swing after a lackluster season last year. Many of us have to do the same thing: make a big change when our go-to strategy no longer works after many years of success.
Top quote here came from Pence explaining his mindset during the revamp: “I had to make a change. … I had to get better, and I had to trust the process.”
That last part – trusting the process – can be the most difficult thing in a pivot. I see too many people lose faith too soon.

I’ve been on both sides of this. It’s hard to keep going when you don’t know if this is the right path. But when you get to the other side – like Pence did – success is even sweeter.
Shout out to Dave Gardner for putting this story on the radar.
