The Power of Service-Oriented Jobs
We’ve lost a lot of icons this year—too many, if you ask me. One loss that hit hard was one of my favorite rock stars, Tina Turner. In reading the obituaries about Tina, I learned that after she left her husband Ike in the 1970s, she took a cleaning job to pay the rent. Yep, Tina Turner cleaned up other people’s messes.
We’ve all been there, working a service-oriented job to fill the gap until you get back on your feet—until you land the new position or bring on new clients. Maybe you cleaned houses, drove a cab or an Uber, worked at a grocery store, waited on tables, or babysat kids.
Unfortunately, service-oriented jobs like those, which run in the background, rarely receive the spotlight. People take those workers for granted. The truth is they’re incredibly important, and they make our world run. Not only that, but these types of jobs allow us to reset and redirect our lives. They’re jobs that transition us to something better.
So, during the Labor Day weekend, I celebrated this type of work and those who do it. Without these folks, our world would derail in a heartbeat.
