The Power of Showing What Happens Behind the Scenes
One of my favorite artists, Kevin Carol, received major media attention in a recent segment on the ABC program 20/20 about reinventing our careers.
Backstory: Kevin is a truck driver turned artist. His sculptures were well received, but he didn’t have much of a following — until he shot videos of himself at his studio making cool stuff. Those videos changed everything. His work took off, and he is now top of mind for bigger art installations.
What made those videos so special — especially when everyone else is also producing video of themselves and their work? Let’s drill down.
Videos that highlight a behind-the-scenes perspective take advantage of the natural allure of an “inside scoop.” Too many thought leaders don’t take advantage of that fascination when they use methodology as the lead. They are so busy explaining stuff that they don’t “show” how it’s done.

Here’s an idea: Instead of making “here’s how to do this” videos, use a “here’s how we do things” perspective. The latter can work as a magnet, showing the “journey” from point A to revealing a more beautiful or desirable point B.Many coaches and thought leaders do this all the time with “hot seats” during live events. Why not on video?
Everyone uses videos as education tools. So, let’s be different and use this tactic as the magnet to attract people to the work. If you can do something magical, then show that magic in action.
