The Strategic Art of Showing Up
When in growth mode, it’s tempting to say yes to every invite to attend and/or speak at an event. It’s good to be seen. And besides, potential clients can be anywhere, right?
Not necessarily.
Insider secret: Many organizations use both attendees and speakers to promote their event, especially on social media. (It makes sense given everyone’s propensity to check in every time we show up somewhere.) A bigger question to ask yourself before heading out the door: “Does publicizing my appearance at this event up-level my brand?”
Listen: These Two Factors Can Help You Decide Where to Show Up
A potential trap is two-fold: First, the flattery of being invited can blind you and cause you to waste precious time. Second, you can get caught up in the false positive of the “I’m busy running around, therefore I’m successful” strategy on social media.
When you promote your presence on social media, you create examples about your prominence. Folks do look at where you show up and make assumptions about who you are. The more prestigious the event, the cooler you look. The bigger the cause, the more generous you appear.
Social media is beyond the “look where I’m at now” phase. Where you show up matters. Let’s be strategic.
