This New Trend In Social Media Is a Game Changer
Whoa! It looks like social media just got disrupted.
App builder Escapex creates personally owned platforms (POPs – someone is good at naming stuff), and they have caught fire. Can’t argue with the reach: 350 clients in 18 countries with a total of 3.5 billion (yes, billion) followers. This April Fast Company article does a great job explaining this dynamic and why it works.
Let’s move past the celebrity use and Instagram focus. Here’s why thought leaders should pay attention to personal apps:
• No more algorithms that dictate who sees your posts. And yep, you own the user data, the content, the images – everything. (Even better: We can kick out the harassers.)
• No sponsors and advertisers. The fans fund the influencer.
• Profitable. You can generate revenue via subscriptions and recommended purchases – with no setup fees. (Escapex does take a cut.)
Listen: Two reasons why Escapex has caught fire – and how we can do the same thing
Short trip to the dark side: The reason why celebrities jumped on this first is because they have a fan base that will pay for access. (Tangent: Porn is having a field day here, as well. Hate groups will be next.) Many of thought leaders are still in building mode, so it won’t be right for them. But those who do have active communities now have a possible alternative to Facebook and LinkedIn groups.
Prediction: I see a split coming between those who have an active fan base and those who are building one. Will the former use their POP to help promote their appearances? And will event organizers consider that promotion in their speaker selection process? You betcha.
No, I’m not endorsing this path – it’s too new. But definitely check it out and ask yourself: Can I build a community that could support a personal app?
