Three Business Game Changes Thanks to Millennials
I’ve often said the biggest game changer for Boomers will be that they are now on the receiving end of change, instead of being the change agents of past decades. This executive summary of Deloitte’s study of almost 8,000 Millennials from 29 countries outlines big transformations ahead for businesses, which means great opportunities for outsiders like us.
Most interesting findings we care about:
- These “kids” will broaden the purpose of business to include general social benefit. They are smart enough to see right through pretty words and they look hard at impact. Look for great opportunities for marketing and branding through leaders to tout new initiatives to answer these tough questions.
- Business leadership will also face an overhaul. Watch for an increased focus on employee wellbeing and treatment, as Millennials cite this consideration as most important. Long-term thinking will be back in vogue. This is a big adjustment for senior execs, so coaches and OD consultants are going to have a field day.
- Another potential leadership issue will be recruitment. In developed markets, only 38% aspire to be the “leader or most senior executive”. A few reasons bandied about include comfort in not being in charge or the unwillingness to pay the high price they currently see. Again, internal branding opportunities look pretty good here.
These findings have huge ripple effects: processes, structures and mindsets will undergo big adjustments. And you can bet that internal resources won’t be enough. Plant seeds now. You never know when they will sprout.
