Three Things That Change How You Work in 2016

Ah, tis the season for crystal ball gazing. Don’tcha just love all these predictions?

Recently Fast Company offered its thoughts on workplace trends. The article was a sleeper (I almost passed it over because of the “world of work” angle), but it shed light on some important changes.

Why we care about these changes: because what happens inside big companies creates new opportunities (and expectations) for the rest of us. Pay attention to these findings:

• Independent consultants are now hired as implementers. Blame the skills gap, but hiring contracting consultants has moved past the big firms and the IT departments. If you are willing to implement (or put together a team who can), these opportunities can provide growth and stability.

• PowerPoint is dead. Video is now the standard for presentation visuals. That means if you speak at industry events using your trusty PowerPoint, you’ll just embarrass yourself.

• Consumer-grade design is now the standard. Anyone doing content marketing had better up their design game. This blog post about infographic sources is a great example: 7 Tools for Building an Infographic in 30 Minutes. Look past the content, and check out how she used visuals to make her point.

The bottom line: the digital age has changed everything. Proceed accordingly.
