A lot of us give color commentary about an issue or something that’s happening in the world. We do it via blog posts, podcasts, social media posts, and more. Doing that well requires a little bit of strategy and finesse.

This Facebook post from Comedienne Tanya Lewis making sense of the Russia/Ukraine war is a great example of one of my favorite tactics: same dynamic, different context.

This tactic works so well because it uses a different context. In doing so, it takes the bias and personal opinion out of the equation. It also allows us to continue a smooth interpretation in ever-changing scenarios. Further, it grounds our understanding of faraway or complicated situations by placing them in familiar territory. And as Ms. Lewis shows, it’s also an opportunity for humor.

A lot of us use analogies. But a better tactic is to turn your analogies into stories. Changing the context is a powerful way to make sense of faraway situations.
