What Audiences REALLY Want
Due to a positive COVID test, I attended last week’s Women Leadership Board meeting virtually. Participating from the monitor reminded me of a good distinction about expectations audiences have.
I was fascinated with the agenda and looked forward to the sessions. However, sometimes I lost interest in what the presenter was saying. Why? Their content did meet my standards.
It wasn’t because of the session description or any promises the speaker made. I was disappointed because I’m used to getting the “insider access” perspective I received during previous board meetings. And I assumed I would have the same experience this time. This conference’s reputation became an expectation.
So, when a speaker gave the same ol’ song and dance the media had already put out, I checked my email and my social media pages. Other temptations won my attention.
The big aha: We develop expectations when we experience the same thing often enough to create a pattern.
Customizing your presentations is normal nowadays. Speakers must go beyond the standard questions we ask organizers. For rave reviews, they must also play to the expectations based on the event’s reputation.

Great message and on point. Being able to give the cutting edge information in the way they expect to hear it is an art . Customization is key
