What Did You Sacrifice?
Well, this has been a very different spring for all of us. And as say goodbye to this year’s Memorial Day weekend, giving gratitude to U.S. military personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice, let’s think about our own sacrifices. (Head’s up: Tough love ahead.)
During the COVID-19 crisis, what have you sacrificed? I’m not asking about “gifts” masquerading as brand awareness. What did you give that you had little of, that can cost you big when doing without? The former is a nice thing to do, no doubt. The latter is a sacrifice. Big difference.
Here’s why I ask: A lot of people are talking about dashed plans. First, it was defiance for spring break. (We all saw how that turned out.) Now it’s prom, graduation, and vacation, and kids and spouses are driving us crazy.
Those are disappointments. And, yes, the loss should be recognized. But those are not sacrifices. They are inconveniences to which we can adapt and adjust.
In the context of what Memorial Day really stands for, let’s remember this distinction. And then ask: Moving into a new normal, what can I sacrifice to help other people? What can I share – and face the fear and consequences of running out – so others will suffer less? How can I support those who lost businesses or jobs?
As for me, I will gladly give up our annual beach vacation so others can stay safe. The ocean will still be there when we can get back. Instead, I’m focused on giving away what I’m frightened to lose.
