What Leadership Development Looks Like Now
Many of us thought leaders want to work with leaders. It’s fulfilling as well as lucrative. This white paper from industry leader Creative Center for Leadership (CCL) is a respectable glimpse into that future. My favorite findings:
- Individuals own their development. The responsibility for learning / development moves away from outside sources (HR, our bosses, etc.) to ourselves. Translation: HR will go from air traffic controller to matchmaker and networker. Watch for current leaders to drive the action here.
- Mindsets trump competencies. Yes, we need to know what we are doing. Skills will always be needed. But these skills will be put into a “bigger mind,” so look for leadership development to focus more on cognitive development. In other words, we need to think in more complex ways.
- The rise of the collective. Are the days of the individual leader as hero over? Yep, according to CCL. Instead, leadership is a state of being that can (and will) reside everywhere. The focus from finding the best leaders will give way to increasing “leadership capacity” throughout the organization.
Yep, these changes look very scary for us experts (especially those who focus on skills). Decision making will be diffused and it may not be clear how we can serve. Prediction: thought leaders who represent mindset over skills will have the advantage. Proceed accordingly.
