The media coverage of Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is an excellent example of what happens after bombshell news gets dropped. And it offers many lessons for people both in the line of fire and on the sidelines.

The media’s responses kept the story alive for longer than the usual news cycle. The content that outlets published fell into two categories:

• General statements from people who were shocked. This is the “official” response. The goal here is to answer but stay above the fray. Queen Elizabeth handled it brilliantly: She acknowledged the heart of the issue, but she kept the next steps at 30,000 feet.

• Informational content and responses. In this category, the media drilled down on the details around the situation. Some outlets used “unnamed senior sources” who defended the royal family, providing the inside scoop. And others used analysis mixed plus color commentary to show off their access. This is where you can play from the sidelines.

While you’re out changing the world, someone will always pop up to criticize your efforts. Your job is to respond in a way that elevates the conversation, not drag it out. And what you say depends on how close you are to the situation.
