When Social Media Conversations Go Sideways: How to Spot Hidden Agendas

I recently had a frustrating experience. A stimulating social media conversation with a business colleague began as a robust discussion but quickly devolved into an impasse, with the person merely repeating common talking points. This made me wonder: What is behind people’s strong resistance to new information, especially during social media conversations?

Then it hit me: This is the power of a hidden agenda. Strong yet concealed motivations can undermine even the best intentions when someone shares an article or idea on social media. Hidden agendas can easily consume their logic.

The sooner we identify and address resistance to new information, the better our chances of diffusing its power. So, how can you spot a hidden agenda in social media conversations? Is it possible to recognize one in a comment or post?

How to Identify a Hidden Agenda in Social Media Conversations

My take: No one has X-ray vision into the human heart, but there are telltale signs you’ve encountered someone who has a hidden agenda. If you pay close enough attention, people reveal their true beliefs. Here are two indications you’ve run into a hidden agenda:

• High Intensity: When someone enters a conversation with intensity, there’s usually a lot of emotion behind their words. Underneath that emotion lies a personal story and a commitment not to back down. What I do is acknowledge their feelings with empathy and ask neutral questions. If they remain defensive, then you have your answer.

• Strong Insistence: You may encounter this situation when you calmly share new information, but the other person remains stubborn to the point of defying logic. For example, consider someone who insists that gravity does not exist. Behind every opinion lies an emotional belief, which can be tough to change. In such cases, I usually choose to walk away from the conversation.

Hidden agendas are significant obstacles that can undermine valuable social media conversations. People with hidden agendas may resist your tactics for influencing them. Watch for the signs and proceed accordingly.
