How to Connect with Your Followers in Real Time
In this election year, there’s a lot of talk about connecting candidates with voters in real time. It turns out celebrities are using the same playbook by defining how they use social media.
Over the winter, Fast Company published an article that outlines the trend and why it works. Let’s move past the celebrity and format (Twitter vs. text) angle. These ideas can work on a smaller scale. Two insights here:
• Broadcast vs. interactive. Note that the celebrities still use popular platforms, such as Pinterest and Twitter, but just for broadcasting special announcements, etc. The interactive element is in a more controlled environment via apps and text. This distinction will definitely bleed over into the influencer/thought leadership space. Be ready, and start thinking now about what you can do.

• Help and access. Check out the opening story. Kerry Washington asks for help and then reciprocates by inviting a few folks backstage. This one-two punch is a great ground game because of the intimate feel of the moment. It’s being close while not being too close.
It’s tempting to downplay these efforts, thinking they work only with the popular people and organizations. Not necessarily. My take: It’s a cycle. The more you’re “out there” the more popular you get. The more popular you get, the more influence you have. While the example of in-person meet-ups is not an option right now, you could do a LinkedIn Live video event. There’s plenty of room for innovative ideas.
